Causes of urinary incontinence
In the vast majority of cases, female urinary incontinence is caused by weakening of the pelvic floor muscles, which, in turn, can be the result of:
- Habit of delaying urination;
- Advanced age – as years pass, the muscles of the pelvic region weaken and lose elasticity;
- During pregnancy, the pelvic region muscles become distended due to the weight and pressure exerted by the baby. Postpartum urinary incontinence is very common. This urinary incontinence can be reversible if measures are taken to correct it;
- Childbirth can also cause urinary incontinence. Episiotomy, which is an incision made in the muscle to facilitate the baby's delivery, also affects the bladder control muscles. This urinary incontinence can be reversible if measures are taken to correct it;
- During menopause, the woman's body stops producing oestrogens, which are female hormones. Oestrogens control and regulate menstrual periods and body changes during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The lack of oestrogens causes the bladder muscles to weaken and lose elasticity, leading to urine leakage;
- Obesity, constipation, and some medications, such as antidepressants, diuretics, sedatives, antipsychotics, or laxatives, can cause urinary incontinence. These factors can be temporary, meaning that urinary incontinence in these situations can be reversible.
